Acrobat Ants

What are acrobat ants?

illustration of an acrobat ant

Acrobat ants are a small species of ant with adults ranging in size from 1/16th to 1/8th of an inch.

They have a segmented body and a distinct heart-shaped abdomen which is usually darker than the rest of their body.

Acrobat ants can range in color from light yellowish-brown to black; some are even multi-colored.

They are referred to as acrobat ants because of the worker’s distinct ability to hold their abdomen up over the rest of their body appearing like they are performing some sort of balancing act.

Are acrobat ants dangerous?

Acrobat ants are not a particularly dangerous pest to people, although they might bite when threatened. Acrobat ants can strip the insulation from wires causing short circuits to occur within your home, and they will contaminate food sources found in the kitchen and other areas. These ants like to nest in damp areas and an infestation may indicate that there is a moisture problem somewhere within your home.

Why do I have an acrobat ant problem?

Acrobat ants usually nest outside in trees, decaying logs, woodpiles, under mulch, or in leaf piles. They will sometimes invade porches, decks, or roof eaves. While foraging for food or shelter they can enter homes through cracks in the foundation, through spaces found around utility lines, and through gaps found around windows and doors. Inside buildings, they will nest behind walls, in insulation, and in crawl spaces. These ants also like to nest in spaces that have been previously used by termites or carpenter ants. Inside homes, they like to feed on sweets and proteins that can be found in kitchen and pantry areas.

How do I get rid of acrobat ants?

Acrobat ants can be tricky to get out of your home, especially because they nest in such hard-to-reach areas. The fastest and most efficient way to get rid of acrobat ants in Nashville and Middle Tennessee is to contact a professional pest control expert who has experience eliminating ants and other pests. At All-American Pest Control, we can help to find and eliminate acrobat ants that have decided to make their home in your home through our year-round Perimeter Pest Control program or our Green Choice program.

Can I do it myself?

The DIY pest control products found at hardware stores are often ineffective against acrobat ants and other household pests, and they can also be dangerous for you, your family, and your pets to be around, especially if they are not mixed or placed properly. DIY pest control products also do nothing to solve the questions of how and why acrobat ants are invading your home in the first place. The best way to safely and completely get rid of these pests from your home and prevent a re-infestation is to get help from a professional ant control expert. If acrobat ants have infested your property or home, contact the professionals at All-American Pest Control today.
